Developer, Horizon Simulations has announced the most popular variant of the Dreamliner family, the Boeing 787-9 for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
In our FSElite interview with Horizon Simulations, they previously said they had no plans in the pipeline to work on a Boeing 787-9 as the focus was on the Kuro 787-8 and LatinVFR Airbus series, but since the interview went live some things have changed and they have decided to push efforts on creating this magnificent aircraft.
The Boeing 787-9 is a long-range, wide-body, twin-engine commercial aeroplane developed by Boeing as a part of their 787 Dreamliner series. It is an extended version of the original Boeing 787-8 and is designed to carry more passengers and cargo over longer distances while maintaining the fuel efficiency and innovative features that are characteristic of the Dreamliner family. With a range of 7,635 nautical miles, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is operated on some of the longest routes around the world, such as London Heathrow to Perth operated by Qantas, New York-JFK to Auckland operated by Air New Zealand and Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney operated by United Airlines.

When will the Horizon Simulations 787-9 be released?
As usual, we’d rather not give timeframes for a potential release date, due to the fact that we do not wish to put our development team under pressure. Not to mention that we’d rather avoid the mistakes of over-promising and under-delivering. We will keep you posted about the development as it progresses.
Will it use the default flight model?
No just like in the case of the Boeing 787-8 from Kuro, we are going to make sure that the flight model is up to the B787-9 specification, and that it is going to match the level of quality that you could expect from Horizon Simulations
Will it have an EFB?
Since the project is based on the AAU2/SU13 framework, yes it will have all of the features that said software framework has to offer, with all of the customisations required to make it look and feel like a Boeing 787-9
Will it have both engine types?
Just like in the case of the Boeing 787-8, this mod will not be exempt from getting the dual engine treatment either. So yes you can expect both General Electric GEnx-1B, and Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine variants.
What liveries will be included?
For the time being the list is quite long that we’d like to implement as we want to make sure that we cover as many real-life operators as possible, including but not limited to:
- Norse Atlantic
- Turkish Airlines
- Qantas
- Air New Zealand
- British Airways
- And more
Will you need the Premium Deluxe version of MSFS 2020 for the B787-9?
In the same way that for Kuro’s B787-8 it is a requirement to have Premium Deluxe, this will not change either with the B787-9. Originally we wanted to make sure that all of the simulator users will be able to enjoy this mod of ours. As the initial release we’re still relying on Asobo’s assets to make this happen, but who knows what the future may hold.
