VATSIM took to their forum to announce their “Cross Africa – Southbound” event hosted by their Sub-Sahara Africa division (VATSSA), Maghreb vACC, and Egypt vACC. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, August 5th, starting at 0900z.
For those unfamiliar with these larger-scale VATSIM events, the goal is replicate real-life operations by providing full air traffic control coverage to flight simulator pilots. This means pilots will talk to clearance delivery all the way through to center control. In addition, because of the shear number of pilots expected to fly, pilots must pre-book a specific departure time, or slot, to help manage the flow of traffic.
For this year’s Cross Africa event, the departure airports will be Mohammed V International Airport (GMMN/CMN) in Casablanca, Morocco and Cairo International Airport (HECA/CAI) in Cairo, Egypt. The destination airports include Kotoka International Airport (DGAA/ACC) in Accra, Ghana, Entebbe International Airport (HUEN/EBB) in Entebbe, Uganda, and O. R. Tambo International Airport (FAOR/JNB) in Johannesburg, South Africa. Pilots even have the option to book one leg to Accra or Entebbe, and then book another down to Johannesburg.
To experience the wonders of the continent of Africa, book your slot for Crossing Africa – Southbound on VATSSA’s website.
