A new developer named SmartSky has announced the development of a groundbreaking Generative AI-based Air Traffic Control solution for MSFS, promising to deliver Air Traffic Control experiences that are “so real, you’ll forget it’s a simulator!”
Given the widespread adoption of generative AI, it was only a matter of time before it found its way into our simulations. That time has now arrived, with SmartSky’s announcement on their website regarding the development of the first AI-based ATC solution for MSFS. While the project’s details remain limited, the developer assures users of a unique ATC solution, allowing them to adjust frequencies without resorting to the traditional “unrealistic” menu. The program boasts hundreds of different voices, all meticulously trained to match the cadence and speaking style of real-life air traffic controllers. This achievement was made possible through the utilization of the advanced GPT-4 large language AI model, combined with what the developers cryptically refer to as their “secret sauce.”
The developers state that the product will support a wide range of VFR scenarios, including flight following, traffic advisories, real-world ATIS, CRAFT-based clearances, Class-Bravo and Charlie procedures, and more. Additionally, it incorporates realistic sound effects such as squelch-tails, static noises, and ground-loop interference. It also simulates distance, making radio stations farther away more challenging to hear than those nearby.
Initially, the product covers only VFR procedures, with plans to introduce IFR procedures for General Aviation shortly after, aiming for implementation early next year. The product page specifies that U.S. airports are staffed 24/7. The lingering question pertains to whether the product exclusively focuses on U.S. airports and if so, when broader international coverage can be expected.
SmartSky actively seeks Beta testers for the product and invites interested users to sign up for Beta testing on their website. Additionally, you can watch their recently published video demonstrating the product in its current stage, providing a glimpse of what users can anticipate upon release.
Rest assured, we will continue to keep you updated on any further developments regarding SmartSky.ai.
