Laminar Research has released its latest update for their X-Plane Mobile service which now includes the previously announced massively multiplayer online (MMO) service. Those on the premium subscription will be able to take part in the online world with friends close and far away.
The new MMO is a completely new way to address multiplayer in the mobile worlds and now people can fly with anyone in the world (irrespective of the device). The single shared world means you can be flying online with both friends or those you’ve never met in a safe environment. This creates a new way to experience online multiplayer.
In addition, a daily event called “Fly-In of the Day” will feature a different airport each day and prompt everyone to check it out. Even if you don’t fly there yourself, Laminar Research has said it makes for a good way to do some virtual plane spotting.
The MMO functionality is still in early access and the team are always looking for ways to improve it. So much so that they have a poll running to see which feature should be added next. Those features are:
- Voice Chat
- Text-based, human ATC (requires volunteers to act as ATC)
- Private groups (fly with only those you invite)
- Plane-spotting mode (be an observer only)
X-Plane for Mobile can be picked up on both the Google Play or iOS stores. The initial download is free, but future products and add-ons can be picked up within the app.
