The airport has seen recent redevelopment along with being renamed after Pope John Paul II who was born Karol Wojtyła. The airport itself is located approximately 8 kilometres from Bari city centre. It handles just under 4 million passenger movements each year, taking passengers to cities all over Europe and North Africa including Munich, London, Milan and Sharm El Sheik operated by airlines such as Alitalia and British Airways.
