The past weekend saw VATSIM have their annual VATCON event. This is a time for members of the VATSIM community to gather and new announcements to be made. Two of the biggest announcements to come from the event was the fact that VATSIM will finally be updating the voice codec. If you don’t know, the codec is what compresses and decompresses the audio through the network. Improving the codec will allow for high quality voice over transmissions, which will hopefully aid in the quality of service. You will still need a decent mic though.
The second piece of news is the fact that VATSIM are now investing to enable voice chat whilst on the UNICOM frequency. This is a huge change in technology and procedure, and so multiple stakeholders and developers are involved with the process. The senior leadership team have made it clear that they should move on ahead ‘without delay.’
VATSIM said we should expect more news over the coming months.
