Update 26 Jan 2018 @ 17:45z
Thanks to the team at FlightDeckX.com, you can now read a full re-cap of the video without the need to watch the hour long presentation. Here are a few highlights:
- Virtual Reality: The next major update to the VR system of X-Plane (VR2) will come fairly soon. It still takes a couple of days to figure out certain details but overall it’s done so expect VR2 soon. VR2 will work with your yoke and even your mouse if desired. In VR2 VR controllers are like joysticks and you can freely assign buttons to them as with any other controller Overall LR considers VR2 to be “quite a big leap” over VR1. However, there won’t be any major performance improvements in VR2. These will come at a later stage.
- Ground handling: Austin admits there are certain bugs whenever there is a transition from e.g. moving around or stopping the aircraft. LR asks to file bug reports describing the exact maneuver (e.g. crosswind takeoff) and conditions (e.g. speed etc.). They also ask to include the aircraft’s .acf file so they can investigate the physics.
- ATC: ATC is still not high priority. However the team emphasizes that they do listen to the users. Eventually the focus will shift to the ATC system, though. That said, some bug fixes will come fairly soon. The team also asks to read this Developer Blog post if you want to support the improvement of the ATC system.
- Third-Party-Aircraft support for VR: Aircraft developers need to adapt the aircraft’s manipulators. However, for the default aircraft LR needed about one day each to add these changes so there’s not a ton of work involved.

Yesterday, the Laminar Research team hosted their live Q&A session on YouTube, allowing community members to ask any question they wanted to them. Austin Meyer was front and center along with Ben, Marty, Phillip, Alex and more. The hour long session saw all kinds of questions being asked including the future of the sim, VR and more. It’s a detailed and interesting video that may even convince you to pick up a copy!
