UK2000 has recently released their rendition of University of Illinois Willard Airport, ICAO: KCMI, for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024.
Named after the former University of Illinois president, Arthur Cutts Willard, the airport first opened its doors on October 26th, 1945 and was primarily in use for general aviation until 1954, when the airport started operating it’s first commercial flights. Over the course of two decades, the airport’s commercial air traffic increased significantly, serving mostly regional commuter flights. For a short while, between 1965 and 1969, it even became the second-busiest airport in the entire state of Illinois, second only to Chicago O’Hare.
This popularity however, was relatively short-lived, as the “Airline Deregulation Act” came into effect in 1978. This act mostly aimed at moving control over airline routes from the federal government, to commercial aviation, in order to provide for a more competitive market. This made airlines become more interested in bigger airports, such a O’Hare, and removed interest from investing into smaller airports, such as Illinois Willard. Over the course of several years, Illinois Willard became less and less popular for commercial aviation, and the airport has slowly made a full circle back to operating almost exclusively general aviation traffic. Nowadays, only American Airlines/American Eagle and United operate short hops between Willard and Chicago O’Hare, using Embraer E-Jets.
UK2000’s rendition of the airport has fully detailed buildings and realistic ground markings, and utilizes PBR textures. There are also highly detailed ground vehicles and static aircraft models, night light effects, and more.
