Announced on ThresholdX earlier today, X-Plane 11 scenery developer Short Final Design announced his intentions on developing a global texture and autogen replacement program. Aptly named SFD Global, the payware product is designed to compete with the likes of Orbx Global for X-Plane 11.
The product has been designed to completely overhaul the simulator. The primary change will be that the default terrain textures within the simulator will be replaced with handmade stuff.
According to the article, the package will also include regional autogen that consists of PBR materials. Things such as trees, cars and buildings have been designed to fit their surroundings on a region by region basis. The first three regions to be released with the product will be the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East. More will come in the future.
The final part of the product will include some well-known landmarks. So far the Petronas Twin Towers and the Leaning Tower of Pisa have been completed. Again, more will come in the future.
There are a nice library over on the source post, which shows off the texture replacement, autogen and landmarks.
It’s still in early development, so no news on any possible release date at this time.
