PMDG Confirms Involvement with Boeing’s Virtual Airplane Procedures Trainer Program

Earlier this week, Boeing unveiled an all-new program that utilises Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) to help provide more immersive training for real-world pilots. In the initial unveiling, the program was confirmed to be using the technology to help support training in the 737 series of planes, but the developer of that technology aircraft has now been confirmed to be PMDG itself.

In a statement to Sky Blue Radio, it has been confirmed that PMDG assisted Boeing by using their own technology to reach Boeing’s goals. PMDG’s Robert Randazzo said to Sky Blue Radio that “PMDG has long been recognized for the high-fidelity and technical accuracy of our simulation technology.” Robert continued, “We were proud that Boeing saw the value in our capabilities and selected our technology to assist them in reaching their goals.”

Built in partnership with Microsoft and powered by Microsoft Flight Simulator and Azure, Virtual Airplane delivers a fully interactive 3D cockpit environment that runs on everyday devices like laptops and tablets. The system allows pilots to practise normal and abnormal procedures in a high-fidelity Boeing 737 MAX cockpit before stepping into a full-motion simulator. Instructors and airlines can also create their own tailored lessons through an integrated authoring suite, making it ideal for scalable, cost-effective pilot familiarisation.

While currently focused on the 737 MAX, Boeing plans to expand the platform to other aircraft types soon. According to Boeing, this will include the 737NG, the 787 and the 777X. Whether PMDG is involved in any of those is unknown and not something we’re willing to speculate on.

This is interesting news as it is the first time we have seen PMDG’s long-awaited MAX series in the simulator, if the video from Boeing is using similar technology to what we will see in our simulators.

Sky Blue Radio have an interview upcoming with Robert from PMDG where it’s said that more information could be shared, along with some new information on the 737 series for MSFS 2024. Should there be anything newsworthy, we will be sure to share.
