Northern Sky Studio has released Kapalua Airport (JHMPHJH) for MSFS.
Kapalua Airport, better known to some as “West Maui Airport”, is the second busiest airport on the Hawaiian island of Maui, and one of 3 commercial airports on the island, located on Maui’s Western shore in a popular resort area. Kapalua has a reputation for strong winds most of the year, with moderate to severe turbulence common operating in and out of the airport. The airport is built amongst pineapple fields and features a single paved runway, requiring back-taxi for aircraft headed tofrom the terminal area.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has all but killed tourism to the region in the last year, only Mokulele Airlines serves the airport with scheduled flights currently, using Cessna 208 Caravans for trips to Honolulu and Kona. Other local operators, including Makani Kai Air, Big Island Air, and Royal Pacific Air offer ad-hoc charters and tours originating from the aircraft using Cessna Caravans and other similarly-sized aircraft. For those interested in larger aircraft, Kapalua can indeed handle larger planes. Hawaiian Airlines DHC-7 STOL aircraft and Island Air’s DHC-6s, DHC-8-100s, and later, Q400s served the airport in the past. Island Air’s flights ended in 2013 shortly before the airline failed as it’s new ATR-72s were too big for the airfield, but Ohana by Hawaiian operated slightly smaller ATR-42s into the airport briefly in 2017, the last large aircraft to regularly fly there. Safely operating any of these larger aircraft at Kapalua will surely be a challenge for simmers with any level of experience.
Northern Sky Studio’s Kapalua Airport scenery recreates every detail of the airport, and also provides custom mesh for the surrounding area. All surfaces utilize PBR, and objects are designed to be efficient on frame rates. All objects feature custom shading and occlusion, while the scenery sits atop a custom high detailed ground photo.
