NineTwo Productions has announced FreeMesh X Global 2.0 which is a global terrain mesh replacement for the stock terrain and features LOD 10 (38 m) coverage in your sim for almost the entire world. LOD10 is the same level of the detail on the terrain as you see in the USA in the stock scenery. The remaining parts of the world vary from LOD6 to LOD9 depending on where you are.
This product FreeMesh X was created to bring the rest of the world up to LOD10 standard as mch as possible, though some regions of the world in the higher latitudes are limited to LOD9.
FreeMesh X features LOD 10 (38 m resolution) in the following areas:
- Australia and Oceania
- North America (USA excluded as it’s LOD 10 in the simulator by default; see lower down for a link to their new USA mesh at LOD 12!)
- South and Central America
Regions that are limited to LOD9 (76 m resolution) are:
- Russian territories north of 60 N latitude
Over 400 GB of raw terrain data was used to compile this software but for the customer it is only 46 GB which is on of the largest freeware projects ever made for a Flight Sim.
NineTwo Productions introduces this version 2.0 as a ‘convenience update’, providing a new installation method, along with integrating all the patches together in a single release.
However, the biggest news appears to be that they are offering a beta version of their new USA high-definition mesh. The download link is in a different location – you can find it here. While they are advising users to be cautious, as the higher LOD mesh can cause some issues with airport plateauing, this still looks to be a great improvement on the previous USA mesh offered by NineTwo.
