Last month, Navigraph asked the community to get together and fill out an in-depth survey about all things flight simulation and beyond. Although it took 20 minutes to complete, over 15,000 people filled it in providing their habits, knowledge and more to build up a detailed understanding on the stance of the community in 2018.
Questions ranged from current simulator usage, preferred flying type, monthly spending on add-ons / hardware and much, much more. The results are now in from that survey and paint a good picture of the current relationship the community have with hardware, platforms and more.
To quote Navigraph’s result, this is the average user in our community:
“The typical flight simulator enthusiast is a 43 year old male from the United States. He flies simulators 2-3 times per week for about 5-10 hours in total and was introduced to flight simulation 20 years ago. There is a 27% likelihood he already has some sort of pilot license. If so, he was introduced to flight simulation before he pursued his pilot license. Moreover he has a bachelor’s degree, is full time employed, makes 50,000 USD per year before tax, and spends about 250 USD on software and 200 USD on hardware annually. He prefers X-Plane 11, but Prepar3D v. 4 is also popular.”
The results are rather comprehensive thanks to the amount of data inputted through the survey last month. Below are some of the highlights from the survey.

We’re going to take a look through and gather some thoughts based on the responses from the survey. Although we weren’t involved with the survey in any way, we feel its appropriate to thank the community for embracing it and taking the time to complete it. The information here really will help our planning and we’re confident developers and publishers will also use this data to better the content produced.
