MK Studios has released its updated Rome Fiumicino Airport (LIRF) Version 2 for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, providing a massive overhaul of Italy’s primary aviation hub. According to the developer, version 2 represents a comprehensive rebuild that leverages the latest capabilities of MSFS as well as updates the airport to the current layout. LIRF V2 features highly detailed terminal interiors, custom-designed functional jetways, hand-crafted airport vehicles, and more. Users will notice airport realism improvements through the use of more precise airport and runway elevation data and custom runway and taxiway lighting. Points of interest in the areas surrounding LIRF have also received MK Studios’ attention, ensuring that the “Eternal City” gateway feels as alive as its real-world counterpart.

Opened in 1961, Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (LIRF) has grown into Italy’s premier aviation gateway and a vital European hub. Spanning approximately 16 km2 (6.2 square miles), the airport has three active runways and three primary passenger terminals. In recent years, the terminals have undergone massive modernization, including the recent addition of a state-of-the-art boarding area for Terminal 1. In 2025, LIRF served a record 51 million passengers, offering direct connections to more than 230 destinations across 80 countries. As the primary hub for ITA Airways, it maintains an expansive intercontinental network, particularly to North America and Asia, while also serving as a base for low-cost, intra-European carriers like Wizz Air.

It’s safe to say that LIRF is a special airport for MK Studios, as it was the developer’s second-ever commercial project, originally released in October 2015 for Prepar3D v3. Since then, the project has served as a benchmark for the evolution of scenery design and simulator capabilities. On their Facebook page, MK Studios provided a retrospective of the scenery’s development over the years, starting with their 2015 P3D release, followed by version 1 for MSFS2020, and now version 2 of the scenery.
