Microsoft has released the latest in their Local Legend line-up: the Heinkel He 70 Blitz. One of the most advanced aircraft of the early 1930’s, this plane was designed for speed. Powered by a BMW engine, the plane featured several innovations for the time: a retractable landing gear, a retractable radiator, and a streamlined airframe. Its elliptical wing design also helped reduce drag, making the aircraft one of the fastest of its time. Lufthansa used it briefly for mail and passenger services, while the military saw the plane fit for light bombing and reconnaissance operations.
While there are no remaining Heinkel He 70 aircraft today, the Microsoft team has poured a lot of effort into ensuring an authentic recreation, going as far as to contact the U.S. National Archives to make sure a digital version can live on in our flight simulator forever.
