The Rockwell B-1 Lancer is a strategic heavy bomber capable of supersonic speeds and agility at lower speeds due to a variable swing wing. The B-1 gets its nickname of The Bone quite simply from its designation of being ‘B-one’. The B-1 was first envisioned by Rockwell in the 1960s to combine the speed of the B-58 Hustler with the range and payload of the B-52 Stratofortress to ultimately replace both. The B-1 had two phases of development. The first, the B-1A, commissioned by Richard Nixon’s administration and was intended to fly faster than mach 2 but the project under Rockwell was cancelled by the Jimmy Carter administration after only four prototypes were produced.
The B-1b was reinstated under the Reagan administration but was to target a higher payload and a lower cruise speed at Mach 1.25 alongside the B-2 Stealth project. The USAF ordered 100 airframes and took delivery of the first of the six blocks in 1985 to the Strategic Air Command. Today the B-1b is maintained by Boeing and operated by the Air National Guard and Global Strike Command. It has been deployed in various theatres in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. The B-1 is due to be phased out in 2025 and replaced by the B-21 Skyraider.
KwikFlight has recreated the Bone for Microsoft Flight Simulator with a detail interior and exterior. The team has also implemented a full CFD flight model to bring realistic aerodynamic performance to enhance handling at low and high supersonic speeds which changes dependent on wing sweep position. The systems consist of a brand new TCAS equipped with TA/RA functionality based on real-time aircraft data, fully functional hydraulic and bleed air system, six MFDs and PFD with autopilot and classic navigation suite including VOR,ILS, ADF and TACAN. KwikFlight has also included 16 real and fictional liveries too.
