The last few weeks have been full of exciting news and announcements, especially during FlightSimExpo 2024 last week. One such recent announcement which may have gone a bit unnoticed was that of IL-2 Korea.
This project came to us in the form of a teaser trailer on YouTube. The teaser however, was only 48 seconds long, of which 10 seconds are just showing water, 5 seconds show the exhaust of a MiG-15 and the other 32 seconds are mostly filled with a black screen.
Nonetheless, it does give us an exciting new project to look forward to, and (finally) a successor to the very successful IL-2 franchise, which previously revolved around the Second World War.
According to the IL-2 Korea website, the new title will be a “next generation combat flight simulator” and will be running on some of the latest software, such as DirectX12, which opens the door to features such as ray tracing, realistic volumetric lighting and more. Other new features, which we haven’t seen in IL-2 titles before, are sloped/uneven airfields, translucent water and “next level of visual model fidelity with diverse damage”.
The website promises eight aircraft with this “next level” damage model. These aircraft include early jets, like the F-86A Sabre and Mig-15. These aircraft will have “all major systems modeled and more detailed damage: internal parts visible through the holes, aircraft skin sheets that can become loose, etc.”
Players will also be able to make use of a better communication system and there is good news for virtual reality enthusiasts as well, as the sim will feature a mouse-free VR environment.
The map will have a size of 440×440 km and will contain cities, airfields and sea ports with people in them, mountains with rivers, roads and tunnels, shallow and deep waters, military camps and more!
You will also have the ability to become a regiment commander and manage your unit supplies, personnel and aircraft. You’ll be able to perform massive air raids on the current generation hardware, thanks to simplified flight modeling of large bomber groups, functional radars and dozens of air, naval and ground unit types.
IL-2 Korea is currently scheduled for a release in 2025. For more information, visit the IL-2 Korea website.
