In development since late 2018, a freeware rendition of Jackson Hole (KJAC) for X-Plane 11 has been progressing admirably over on the X-Plane.org forum by user odog. He has kindly presented us with some exclusive previews to share as the airport is coming to its final stages of development. All previews shown are work-in-progress and do not represent the final release.
Jackson Hole Airport is situated north of Jackson, in Teton County, Wyoming right in the centre of Jackson Hole. It is the only airport in the United States to be located within a national park, in this case, Grand Teton. This provides for a remarkable, scenic approach or departure from the airport on a clear day as it is encompassed by mountains.
The largest aircraft that operates in and out of KJAC is the Boeing 757-200 with Delta and United. Other airlines include Frontier and American with the A319, A320 and smaller, regional aircraft.
From the previews, you notice that the developer has attempted to captivate many small and striking details found in the airport’s real-world counterpart. In addition to the spring and summer orthophoto textures, winter textures will also be included as this is a popular winter destination, and there’s no way you wouldn’t find Jackson Hole with snow in the winter season!
The developer, odog, plans to release the airport into version 1 within the next two weeks as he cleans up some loose ends and adds the finishing touches. Once released, he’s going to be fully dedicated to continually further develop this scenery to improve it over time as feedback comes in and his development skills advance.
We will endeavour to let you know once version 1 of Jackson Hole (KJAC) has officially been published. You can actually grab a pre-release version back from December if you can’t wait, however, it does not look the same as the version portrayed in these previews. You can view the forum thread here.
