FlyByWire Simulations Releases VNAV Version 1 for the Development Branch

The FlyByWire Simulations team has released a new update in the dev version for their A32NX that includes the long-awaited custom VNAV system.

The new vertical guidance system is the first version released by the team and comes with a number of features at present. VNAV – Version 1 provides vertical guidance in managed modes and also gives visual indicators on the ND and MCDU. Whilst this new system has been in testing via the ‘experimental branch’ for some time, the team have moved it into a new branch, enabling more users to give it a go.

On the FlyByWire Simulations documents page, the feature set for this first version is revealed. Currently, VNAV supports accurate speed, altitude, time and fuel predictions for all flight phases, along with the ability to program cruise steps via the MCDU. Furthermore, there is vertical predictions on the navigation display in the form of pseudo waypoints and also pause at top of decent quality of life improvements.

This is our first step of custom implementation of the vertical navigation capabilities in the A32NX. It implements the basic vertical prediction and guidance functions. Additional features and improvements to existing functionality will follow in future PRs.

There are still a number of features which are yet to be implemented. This includes the following:

  • Vertical guidance for non-precision approaches, including FINAL APP and FLS.
  • Required Time of Arrival (RTA) functionality.
  • TOO STEEP PATH segments and markers in the MCDU.
  • MORE DRAG message on the PFD
  • Equitime-point functionality
  • More sophisticated temperature model (matching H3)
  • Optimum step alts functionality
  • Energy circle display on the ND
  • Accurate data acquisition from ADRs

The FlyByWire Simulations team will no doubt be keen to get feedback as more users take advantage of the new VNAV capabilities. As feedback comes in, it’s likely more improvements and additions will be made to the freeware Airbus A320NEO for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

VNAV in general has been in the aircraft for a while, but it moving to a new branch signifies the confidence the team has in its stability. It’s not quite ready for the ‘stable’ branch as of yet.
