FlyByWire Simulations A380X Sees Huge Update Including Release Expectations, System Requirements, and Features

A brand-new blog post has been shared on the FlyByWire Simulations website detailed much more on the upcoming A380X for Microsoft Flight Simulator. This includes release expectations, system requirements, and much more about the features included in the initial release.

When Will the FlyByWire Simulations A380X Be Released?

Starting with the release expectations, the team did not give a release date at this time, but once it is out, it will be in an ‘open alpha’ condition. This means that whilst it will be publically available, it is a piece of work that will be worked on continuously for the next few years. This is a similar state as the A32NX when it released.

That said, FlyByWire has said that under most circumstances, the aircraft is operational for a decent A to B flight on VATSIM. There are still going to be features that will be worked on to ensure its as close to the real aircraft as possible.

System Requirements for the FlyByWire Simulations A380X

To further set expectations, FlyByWire are clear that users should expect performance to be, on average, 25% lower than the A32NX as a point of reference. This is due to the nature of the additional system and the modelling of the plane pushing Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 to its limits. The team will continue to optimise as development progress, and as a reminder, this is from the ‘open alpha’ stage of release.

To help, they have provided a list of system requirements for the A380X.

Minimum (1080p30 Low)

  • CPU: Intel i5-4460 or Ryzen 3 1400
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB or AMD RX 480 8GB
  • Memory: 8GB
  • Storage: 28GB* free space (HDD or SSD)

*At least 4-8GB needed for pagefile (virtual memory)

Recommended (1440p30 High)

  • CPU: Intel i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 3600
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB or AMD RX 6600 XT 8GB
  • Memory: 16GB
  • Storage: 20GB free space (SSD)

Flying By Wire (1440p/4K DLSS 60 High/Ultra)

  • CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • GPU: RTX 4080 Super 16GB or 7900 XTX 24GB
  • Memory: 32GB
  • Storage: 20GB free space (SSD)

FlyByWire Simulations Features and Capabilities During this Release

During this open alpha stage, you will be able to use a number of features and capabilities to assist in flying. Expect to be able to use a full custom FMS with fms-v2 implementation. All ARINC424 leg types are supported, including sequencing of waypoints, an accurate MDF F-PLN page and also support for holding.

All displays are enriched with data, including the following: Primary Flight Display (PFD), Navigation Display (ND), Engine and Warning Display (EWD), and System Display (SD) featuring precise MEMOs for numerous systems. There is also an electronic checklist for normal and some abnormal procedures, along with QNH pre-selection in the FCU.

Those hoping for Brake to Vacate (BTV) will be pleased to see it in the alpha release, along with Runway Overrun Warning/Protection (ROW/ROP). There will also be an Onboard Airport Navigation System, implemented GPWS, terrain display, and more with A380-specific animations.

Finally, there will be tilting landing gear with realistic nose wheel steering, body wheel steering and also the implementation of a heading control function (HCF) to assist taxi operations by countering crosswind or slope without any pilot input.

The FlyPadOS v3 will also be part of the release, giving you the ability to calibrate throttle, control payload, and also refuelling the large plane. There will be support for default ground services, and some preliminary support for GSX (it may come just after release).

What Will be INOP?

A specific list will be made at a later time in the documentation, but FlyByWire has reiterated that the plane is going to be able to fly A-B on VATSIM in most circumstances. As development continues, the list of INOP items will lessen.

Tutorials and MSFS 2024 Support

A range of tutorials and documentation will be made available alongside the aircraft release. The team who has worked on documentation has worked with type-rated A380 pilots to ensure that you will have everything you will need. As the project evolves, so too will the documentation.

As for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the team has said that there will not be a specific version at launch. Whilst it may work by simply moving the contents to the new sim, it cannot be guaranteed by the team. It may take the team a few weeks or months depending on the required changes to bring the model to the new standards set by the new simulator.
