FlightSim Development Group (FSDG) has announced that they are returning to the Greek islands with a brand new airport for both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. The airport in question is actually still under development in the real-world too, meaning we won’t see a release for quite some time. That airport is Kastelli Airport (LGTL) and isn’t due to be operational until 2027.
The airport originally served as a military base on the Greek island of Crete. As tourism grew in the region, Iraklion Airport has been put under increasing pressure to expand. However, the local Government felt that repurposing Kastelli Airport into a commercial airport would be best. Construction is well underway but has faced several delays due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and other issues. It was due to begin operations in 2025, but the official website now states 2027.
FlightSim Development Group is making a digital replica of the airport in the meantime and will launch the airport product alongside the real-world opening. Whether they shoot for the 2025 ‘original’ opening or instead wait until 2027 is yet to be seen. Regardless, the trailer above gives us a little sneak peek of what to expect.
Considering that the release could be 3 years away, this will be a project we will have to follow to see how it develops over the next few years.
