First Look: Black Square Caravan Professional for MSFS

A real-world Caravan pilot’s detailed first look at Black Square’s Caravan Professional for Microsoft Flight Simulator…

First Look: Black Square Caravan Professional for MSFS

Author’s Note: Over the past 8 years, I’ve been lucky to regularly pilot both the Cessna Grand Caravan and Grand Caravan EX “in real life”. During that time, I’ve become familiar with the airplane’s capabilities, operations, and of course, some of its quirks. It’s with great excitement that I’m able to bring you this ‘First Look’ at Black Square’s rendition of the airplane I’ve come to know and love.

When it was released in 2022, Black Square’s Steam Gauge Overhaul for the default Cessna 208B was a refreshing alternative for Caravan enthusiasts. The addon transformed the modern, yet relatively simple default aircraft into a seriously detailed, realism-obsessed, vintage version of the iconic hauler. Now, Black Square’s Caravan Professional series has landed, offering much more than just an upgrade to its predecessor.

The Caravan Professional represents a ground-up rebuild, featuring completely new exterior models, high-fidelity systems, and the advanced turbine simulation that has made the developer’s Dukes and Starship legendary in the flight sim community. After spending some time with the new Caravan Professional in MSFS 2024, it’s clear that this is no longer a “mod” making the most of a default MSFS aircraft—it is a standalone, study-level simulation of one of aviation’s favorite workhorses.

A Legend Reborn

The Cessna 208 Caravan is an airplane that needs no introduction. Since its first flight in 1982, the Caravan has formed the backbone of regional cargo operations and humanitarian missions alike. But, despite its ruggedness, it’s equally at home on the FBO ramp surrounded by business jets, hauling VIPs on short hops to the Hamptons or island hopping in the Caribbean, for example.

Black Square has leaned into the Caravan’s heritage by offering the aircraft in two packages (or, combined in a discounted bundle): the Caravan Professional Passenger edition featuring the Grand Caravan with and without the cargo pod, and the Amphibious & Cargo edition, which includes the Super Cargomaster and the amphibious float variant.

For those who already own the original Steam Gauge Overhaul, the panel might look familiar at first glance, but the developer notes that the code complexity has roughly doubled, representing over 1,000 hours of new development.

Documentation & Visuals

In typical Black Square fashion, the package includes a detailed 148-page manual providing more than just a “how-to” for simmers. Rather, the documentation provides a deep dive into the complete operations of each of Caravan Professional’s avionics options, the PT6A-114A turbine engine, electrical schematics, and performance tables that Black Square says are accurate to within 2% of the Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH). A series of technical overview videos is provided as well.

The visual upgrade from the Analog series Caravan is noticeable; the new exterior models feature crisp, high-quality textures with lots of accurately-placed, bump-mapped rivets and fasteners. Inside, the cabin features five upholstery packages ranging from rugged cargo utility to commuter seating. We also get Black Square’s EFB tablet, allowing for real-time monitoring of aircraft systems, hot-swapping avionics, and triggering both scheduled and MTBF failures.

Since the Analog Series Caravan used the default MSFS model, realistic weathering was basically non-existent. In the Caravan Professional, both the interior and especially the exterior feature realistic touches that enhance the realism; look for nicks in the prop blades and bug spatters on the wings and engine cowl. Subtle touches that make the airplane look like it’s been flown. Exterior elements such as pitot and engine inlet covers, wheel chocks, and a ground power unit (GPU) can be configured via the tablet. All four of the Caravan’s doors are fully operational, with the front two featuring an animated fold-out ladder.

Systems

We’ve touched on Black Square’s “obsession” with detailed systems in previous First Looks before, and most simmers can agree that the developer shines when it comes to creating realistic aircraft systems. Lucky for us, the Caravan Professional inherits the advanced turbine engine simulation proven in the Starship and Turbine Duke. This means:

  • Realistic Engine Starts: Factors like residual heat, battery condition, and even tailwinds will affect your ITT during startup. Hot starts and hung starts are a very real threat.
  • Propeller Physics: The physics-driven propeller governor and feathering simulation, along with a functional beta range, make ground handling feel authentic. You can effectively use the prop beta range to slow down on short, rugged strips or during taxi.
  • Engine foreign object (FOD) damage: Use of the inertial separator to avoid engine damage caused by ingestion of FOD depends on surface type (dirt/gravel, water runways).
  • 100+ Possible Failures: From bird strikes and compressor stalls to more subtle things like what Black Square labels “stiction” in the analog needles (which requires a literal tap on the glass to free them), the failure system can be set to “Mean Time Between Failure” (MTBF) for a truly unpredictable experience.

Quirks of flying the real-life version of the Caravan are replicated in the simulator version now, too. Take, for example, the residual heat from an earlier engine run causing a higher than usual ITT during the subsequent startup. Or, fuel tanks that slowly imbalance over the course of a flight – something real-world Caravan pilots have learned to actively take a role in monitoring.

Avionics

The Caravan Professional offers 12 hot-swappable radio configurations. Whether you want to go old school with the Bendix KNS-80 RNAV and no GPS, or you prefer modern convenience with the GTN 750 and 650 (PMS50 or TDS), changing avionics is as simple as selecting the desired combination via the tablet. From the KFC 150 Autopilot to the RDR1150XL Weather Radar, every instrument has been coded to operate realistically. Instruments even react to the aircraft’s electrical state, including realistic voltage-based light dimming.

Sounds & Flight Dynamics

Spinning up the Caravan Professional’s engine, you’ll immediately be enveloped in the soundscape created by Boris Audio Works for the aircraft. The PT6’s signature startup whine and “woosh” when combustion begins are not only accurate, but also immersive. Even the “buzzsaw” sound of the 3-bladed McCauley propeller moving out of its feathered position during startup (along with the Caravan’s nose-lowering “crouch” as the engine starts producing thrust) has been captured beautifully. Shutting down the PT6, the engine whine cuts off, leaving the whir of the propeller blades as they feather.

Black Square says the flight model uses the latest features of MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024, including voxel-based CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) for wing and propeller dynamics in the air, and flexible tire physics on the ground. The Caravan feels heavy and stable, but demands the pilot’s attention using appropriate control surface trim, just like the real airplane.

Closing Thoughts

In my experience, the Caravan Professional is much more than just a simple update to the Steam Gauge Overhaul Analog Caravan. The aircraft benefits greatly from the four years of complex aircraft development experience Black Square has gained since the Analog Caravan’s release. The new exterior models, improved systems realism, physics-driven modeling, and audio immersion from the Boris Audio Works soundscape bring us an addon that takes the classic Caravan to new heights in MSFS. Whether you’re hauling cargo through the Alaskan bush, dropping off executives for a business meeting, or flying vacationers between Caribbean islands, this is the Caravan you will want in your virtual hangar.

Release & Availability

The Black Square Caravan Professional will be released on 17 March 2026 via JustFlight.com. The Caravan Professional Passenger version, or Caravan Professional Amphibian & Cargo packages, are available separately for $47.99 each. A bundle featuring all four variants is available for $64.99. The aircraft is fully compatible with both Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024.
