Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has been designed around various core pillars, one of which was to increase the ground detail massively. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 brought in a digital twin, but Microsoft and Asobo is going even further with the new simulator, adding a new dynamic world to flight simulation.
From the Global Preview Event, we were able to see side-by-side comparisons of how the two simulators look from both the World perspective and also at various airports.
World
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has a huge emphasis on building a much more realistic world, thanks to improved data and technology. The end result of this is a world that is 4000 times more detailed thanks to increased geometry polygon count, and increased texture resolution. Furthermore, the addition of new species of trees, foliage types, and all-new animals all help to achieve a more life-like and dynamic world.
Below, you can see side-by-side comparisons of the world, with the original Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 on the left, and the new sim on the right. These images are taken in spots all around the world and include areas that take advantage of the new countryside technology to increase the ground resolution. All of this is default Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and gives you a great idea on how the world will look in the new simulator.
Airports
Below is a comparison of how Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 compares to its predecessor. On the left you will see screenshots taken from Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, and on the right, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
The first image comparison shows a procedurally generated airport and how the runway and taxiway textures are vastly improved. The new 4000x resolution improvement brings with it an increase in detail with rubber tyre marks, dirt, grime, cracks, and more all visible.
Below that, you can see comparisons of the handcrafted KASE, KJFK, EIDL airports that come as part of the simulator. With new technology, improved SDKs and materials, the teams have managed to recreate airports in much high fidelity than before.
