Recreate the world’s shortest commercial flight in MSFS 2020 and 2024!

Burning Blue Design Releases Westray and Papa Westray for MSFS

Burning Blue Design has released its latest add-on airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and 2024, both versions of which are available in a single package.

Westray and Papa Westray (EGEW and EGEP) are two small airfields named after the islands on which they reside in the Orkney Islands, north of the Scottish coast.

In the real world, both airports are served by a Loganair Britten Norman Islander (BN2P) which operates a route from Kirkwall, then from one island to the other, and then back to Kirkwall. This makes the trip from Westray to Papa Westray the shortest commercial flight in the world. Flight time is scheduled for a minute and a half, although the average time in the air is normally around 60 seconds with the shortest recorded commercial flight between the two islands being a staggering 52 seconds.

The facilities are minimal, reflecting the rural nature of the islands, but both airports represent vital lifelines for their respective communities, supporting tourism, medical transport, and everyday travel.

Papa Westray’s airport is the smallest of the pair. Despite residing on a tiny remote island, the passenger service brings some tourists to Papa Westray, famed for its archaeological heritage, including the Knap of Howar, one of the oldest preserved stone houses in Europe.

A full featurelist is included below:

  • Over 50 custom 3D objects each with full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) textures.
  • Based on the 2024 layout.
  • Full custom night lighting.
  • Animated garage doors which close at night.
  • Custom windsocks.
  • Animated spectators who leave at night.
  • Real-life static aircraft seen at the airport:
    • Loganair Brittan-Norman BN-2 Islanders (G-BCPA & GBLDV)
  • Real-life Surrounding scenery has been added as visual reference points:
    • All trees have been removed from the island of Papa Westray and the Aikerness peninsular
    • Tens of miles of dry stone walls have been added to the areas around the airports
    • numerous farms and surrounding buildings have been created to ensure accuracy during approach and take-off.
    • Papa Westray War Memorial
  • High-resolution colour corrected ground textures taken from Bing maps and manipulated for consistency and realism.
