Starting life as RAF Finningley in 1915, Doncaster Sheffield International was opened in 2005 and has become a busy hub for airlines such as Tui and more recently Wizz Air UK. Being located 6 miles south-east of Doncaster city centre and 19 miles east of Sheffield gives the airport a prime position to compete with Yorkshire’s busiest airport, Leeds Bradford, just 40 or so miles away.
RAF Finningley was the home to many different squadrons and aircraft types over its 90-year lifespan to include RAF bomber command with Nos 7 and 102 squadrons during WWII flying Handley Page Heyfords and later Avro Ansons. After the war, Squadron 616 flew De Havilland Mosquito and Gloster Meteor aircraft until the V Force made up of Vulcan (including the infamous XH558), Victor and Valiants with 101 Squadron moved onto the airbase in 1957.
Boundless has recreated Doncaster Sheffield International to include an authentic rendition of the airport main terminal with modelled interior, hangars and other airport buildings along with all nearby hotels being modelled and thousands of accurately place objects with custom PBR textures. To bring the airport to life, Boundless has included PBR water textures and puddles on the aprons and taxiways, custom trees and forests and custom static and animated ground vehicles and road traffic.
In 2011, the Vulcan To The Sky trust moved XH558 to its permanent home of Doncaster where it still operates fast taxi manoeuvres. Boundless has lovingly modelled a Vulcan which is visible on the north side of the airport.
