Blackbird Simulations has released the A6M5 Zero for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, available exclusively through their official product page. The aircraft has been developed to represent the Nakajima-built A6M5 Model 52, an evolution of Japan’s well-known WWII naval fighter. This release continues Blackbird’s focus on historically grounded military aircraft and brings a simulation of the Zero to the MSFS 2024 platform.
According to Blackbird Simulations, the aircraft has been built using reference documentation and test data to reflect the true performance characteristics of the A6M5. Emphasis has been placed on aerodynamic behaviour consistent with the real aircraft—agile at lower speeds, with progressively reduced responsiveness at higher airspeeds. The flight model has been constructed using Asobo’s modern CFD system and includes custom surface physics for more accurate performance.
The systems modelling includes a range of simulated subsystems such as electrical and fuel systems, realistic engine behaviour, and startup procedures. A mechanical hand-crank starter is also included as part of the cold-and-dark workflow. The simulation supports optional wear and failure logic, allowing for components to degrade over time depending on usage. A custom canopy vibration system, oil and engine effects, and propeller damage are also modelled.
The aircraft features a detailed cockpit with historically accurate instrumentation, a functional Type 98 gunsight, and gauge options to suit varying realism preferences. Ten liveries are included, each depicting documented wartime schemes, and the aircraft’s visual model includes damage states, smoke, and grime build-up over time. A menu interface is included within the sim to access various aircraft options and settings.
Those who purchase the product via the Blackbird Simulations website will have access to a version with fully functional weapons systems, including firing logic, recoil, and ammunition weight modelling. Due to platform restrictions, these features are disabled in the Marketplace version. Regardless of version, all other core systems and visual elements remain consistent.
