BeyondATC has rolled out Stage One of its long-awaited VFR update, now available via the experimental branch.
The initial release focuses on introducing the core systems required to support VFR flying. Simmers can now operate as VFR traffic, conducting circuit or pattern work at towered airports while IFR traffic continues to be actively managed around them. The update also enables users to enter and leave controlled airspace, although this is currently limited to towered airport environments.
A key part of the update is the introduction of region-specific phraseology, with dedicated systems for the UK, US (including Canada), and Australia. These regional differences extend to procedures and in-sim prompts, offering a more authentic experience depending on where you are flying.
Stage One also introduces a fully featured circuit system. Pilots can perform touch-and-goes, low approaches, full stop landings, and stop-and-go operations, alongside dynamic circuit direction logic that adapts to terrain and runway conflicts. Additional features include intersection departures, taxi-back options, and improved handling of arrivals and re-joins into controlled airspace with multiple join types supported.
BeyondATC has also implemented early traffic deconfliction within the circuit environment. ATC can now issue instructions such as extending downwind or requesting orbits to sequence aircraft, alongside providing basic traffic information. However, this system is still in development and will be expanded further in future updates.
On the phraseology side, the update brings more realism with features such as regional callsign shortening, improved ICAO-aligned terminology, and initial support for VFR squawk assignment in the UK. A large airframe library has also been introduced, allowing ATC to reference aircraft types by name rather than ICAO code.
Despite the significant additions, the developer has made clear that this is only the first stage of VFR implementation. Notably absent are VFR traffic, full support for non-towered airports, flight following services, and realistic zone transit systems, all of which are planned for future updates.
The release forms part of Version 1.9.0 Experimental and lays the groundwork for a more complete VFR experience in the future. As with any experimental build, users can expect ongoing tweaks and fixes as development continues.
BeyondATC can be purchased for one of two standalone prices and then enhanced through the use of premium voices. You can learn more here. More information on the update can be found on their Discord.
