The first of a multi-part video series from Aerosoft reveals much more about its upcoming Frankfurt Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
In the 10-minute video, hosted by Aerosoft community Manager Rafi, we learn more about the development progress and what to expect. Rafi is joined by Jo and Lukas to talk all about the huge German airport.
In the video, Jo spoke about the complexities involved of modelling such a large airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The process was helped by having extensive on-site photography shoots in order to capture the cargo area, terminal, and more. This enabled the team to really focus on the details found exclusively at Frankfurt airport. Also, due to the mix of architectural styles, this added additional challenges for the team.
Another area Jo and Lukas were keen to ensure wasn’t compromised was performance. A lot of time was spent on reducing polygon count, reusing materials and implementing level of detail (LOD) techniques throughout to really optimise performance. It should be noted that whilst that care has been given, it’s still a large airport with many complex shapes, so set your expectations.
Other key tidbits from the video include the fact that Jo and Lukas implemented accurate terrain levels and legal satellite imagery, meaning it is high in resolution and the most up-to-date available. Another point to note is that terminal 3 is modelled based on the ‘expected final state’, but not operational in the sim (as per real life). An update will follow as more details on the terminal become clear.
As mentioned, there’s a lot to uncover in the video, so be sure to watch it. There are going to be a few more videos in the near future as Aerosoft builds to the release of Frankfurt Airport (EDDF) for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
